What is a basic page?

A 'Basic page' is one of the simplest and most useful content types. Basic pages are each organised around a single topic and should make up the majority of content pages on your website.

Use a basic page for:

  • static or informational web content.

A basic page shouldn't be used for:

  • very long or dense content that would benefit from being a structured page
  • time sensitive content such as a news article.

How to create a basic page

Basic pages can be created, edited and deleted by:

  • editors
  • site coordinators.

Once you log in to your website:

  1. Hover over the Drupal 'Content' menu, then go to 'Add content' > 'Basic page'.
  2. Enter a page title, summary and add all page content to the 'Body' field.
  3. Tick the 'Provide a menu link' box and choose a 'Parent item' for the page to sit under. This will add it to the main menu.
  4. Click the 'Publish' button to save and publish the page.

Best practice

  • Add each basic page to the main menu so users have a clear navigation path.
  • Include a summary so search engines can display a relevant description in their search results
  • Avoid using the 'Aside' field for important calls to action – this field drops to the bottom of the page on mobile devices.
