First day
If you are new to UQ or an existing staff member changing roles, Workday has a number of tasks automatically set up and assigned to you to complete. This includes onboarding activities assigned to you prior to your first day, activities that you need to complete on your first day, and activities beyond your first day.
To view your required tasks, please navigate to your Workday Inbox or the 'My Onboarding' application via the menu.

First Week
During your first week you should:
- get your staff ID card
- log in to Workday and learn how to update your personal details, view your payslips, manage payroll deductions, and apply for leave
- find out about transport and getting to your campus
- apply for a parking permit, if you need one
- complete the mandatory and required training for your role
- complete your health and safety induction
- familiarise yourself with our Attendance, Hours of Work and Overtime (Professional Staff) Procedures
Orientation events
Welcome Events
New staff will be invited to a ‘Welcome to UQ’ event within a couple of months of starting at UQ:
- learn about UQ's community, facilities and resources
- be welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor and other members of our Executive.
'Welcome to UQ' events will be held regularly throughout the year at our St Lucia, Gatton and Herston campuses. New starters will receive an invitation via their UQ staff email to register to attend the next available event at their location following their commencement date.

All Staff Expo
UQ hosts an annual All Staff Expo showcasing the benefits and opportunities available to UQ staff. Details of this event will be announced via UQ Update, the weekly staff newsletter.
Orientation for Academics
If you are an academic staff member, you can also sign up for the next Orientation for Academics new to UQ to:
- understand your role as an academic at UQ
- learn about teaching and learning resources, and development opportunities.
Orientation for Academics is run twice a year, at the beginning of each semester. Dates are scheduled at the start of each year.

Managers and induction officers
The onboarding process is an employee's first impression of the University and how we operate. As a manager, you play an an important role in ensuring a positive onboarding or cross borarding experience for your new team member. Workday enables Managers (and Induction Officers) to effectively carry out the onboarding process for new starters ensuring that all induction tasks are completed in a timely manner and mandatory compliance training is actioned by new employees.
Each Faculty/Area have a tailored Onboarding Checklist as part of the Manager/Induction Officer tasks in Workday. Please ensure you follow and action all the items of this checklist.
