Staff and their immediate family members can access a free and confidential wellbeing, coaching and counselling service.

You can use it for:

  • personal wellbeing coaching, and individual counselling and support
  • coaching for managers around supporting team members, or their own wellbeing at work
  • nutrition and diet advice
  • personal financial wellbeing
  • domestic violence referral service
  • tips, tools, and resources for your own overall wellbeing.

The program is provided by PeopleSense, UQ's wellbeing and employee assistance provider, through qualified practitioners.

Access services and resources

Confidential phone counselling, manager assist and critical incident services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

Services

Individual coaching and counselling support

Up to 6 sessions per presenting issue per 12 month period available 24 hours a day, 7 days a           week

Face to face 
 Over the phone and virtual

You can talk to a Registered Psychologist to assist with a range of health and wellbeing issues, including:

  • mental health
  • family, relationship and parenting issues
  • work challenges and work-life balance
  • stress and conflict management
  • grief and loss
  • sleep and exercise habits
  • domestic and family violence 
  • support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and LGBTIAQ+ people.

EAP sessions are typically structured, short-term, solution-focused interventions. If you require further clinical support or longer-term interventions, your EAP psychologist may refer you to a more suitable service for ongoing support. The 6 session entitlement is in addition to any other services referred to below. In addition, you are able to obtain 6 sessions for more than a single presenting concern. This means that those entitled to EAP are able to access 6 sessions for one presenting issue (e.g. work concerns) and another 6 session entitlement for another unrelated issue (e.g. personal concerns).

All information you disclose to an EAP psychologist is confidential. No personally identifying reports or information are given to UQ without your consent.

Making an appointment

When you call to make an appointment you can discuss appointment types, timing and locations to find something that suits you.

Face-to-face consultations in order to protect from the transmission of COVID-19, physical distancing will be required during face to face consultations and telephone or video consultations are available. 

Phone consultations may have a greater availability of consultation times and practitioners compared to face-to-face appointments.

Call emergency services 000 if you or someone else is in imminent danger.

Cancellations

If you're not able to attend an appointment, please call and cancel.

If you cancel less than 24 hours before your appointment, it will count as 1 of your 6 free sessions.

Manager and supervisor support

 Available over the phone only available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Through the Manager Assistance Program, managers and supervisors can access confidential support over the phone to work through workplace issues and challenges.

Support may include:

  • providing a sounding board on people or team-related topics
  • coaching on wellbeing conversations with team members
  • guidance on workplace support for staff with mental health concerns or ill health
  • strategies to work through issues such as performance, conflict, communication, and individual or team behaviour.

This service does not provide advice on the management of employment-related matters where advice from Human Resources should be sought

Financial counselling

3 hours
Available over the phone only

Staff and their immediate family members can access 3 hours of financial counselling over the phone with an accredited practitioner.

This is a coaching service to build understanding and awareness around budgeting and your finances. It does not make product recommendations or promote any financial organisation approach.

Exercise support

3 hours

Staff and their immediate family members can access 3 hours of individualised exercise support. 

This can assist you in developing a customised exercise program, based on an individual’s fitness level, life goals and preferred exercise methods.

  • Programs can be provided via remote teleconferencing.
  • Sessions can be used to measure, track and update an employees’ fitness level to increase their physical wellbeing. We can devise exercise plans for employees that are free, performed at home – that don’t have to be overly vigorous, exhausting or strenuous to be of significant benefit.

Nutritional counselling

Staff and their immediate family members can access 3 hours of nutritional counselling over the phone with a nutritionist or dietitian who provides telephone consultation, advice and nutrition programs designed to support the eating habits of everyday people, encouraging healthy options and addressing weight problems.

Legal support

2 sessions
Available over the phone only

Staff and their immediate family members can access 2 hours of access to family legal firms in Australia.

The services in this support program include an initial consult with one additional follow-up session in relation to family law (pre-nuptial, parenting, complex family, separation, and divorce, binding financial, property settlement and conveyancing). 

Domestic or family violence support

Call 1300 307 912 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you or someone close to you is experiencing family violence. Psychologist at PeopleSense have compulsory DV training with 'My Safety Kit.'

This service offers:

  • confidential support for individuals experiencing family violence
  • advice about supporting a friend or colleague experiencing family violence and
  • information and resources.

Critical incident management support

This service is available to the workplace to provide support after a critical incident associated with the workplace or colleague.

Managers should contact their HR Client Services team for support with the relevant procedures and support considerations.

Managers or HR can call 1300 307 912 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to arrange this service. It can often be arranged on the same day or within 24 hours. You'll be asked about appropriate timing, locations and number of employees to be supported.

Benestar was the University of Queensland's Employee Assistance Program. The contract with Benestar will finish on 24 November 2022 and Employee's and their immediate families can access support from Benestar by calling 1300 360 364 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

There is a commitment to ensure that any clients of Benestar are able to finalise their sessions. To ensure this employees who are engaged with Benestar as of 24 November 2022 will be able to continue use of their entitlement until 24 January 2023.
