What assistance is available

UQ staff can use the service for almost anything troubling you, including:

  • Counselling and coaching for your wellbeing – Talk to a psychologist on almost any matter, whether personal or work-related.
  • Welfare Calls* – Contact PeopleSense to request a welfare call.
  • Critical incidents* – Get help for your team after a traumatic incident.
  • Domestic or family violence – Get help anytime if you or someone you know is experiencing violence.
  • Exercise* – Get a customised exercise program to match your fitness level and goals.
  • Family law* – Get up to 2 hours of initial legal advice.
  • Finance* – Understand your finances and improve your budgeting.
  • Nutrition* – Talk with a nutritionist or dietician about your eating habits and healthier options.
  • Managing staff*– Gain confidential support for workplace issues and challenges, including handling stress and conflict and managing a healthy work-life balance.
  • AltiusLife wellbeing platform - online platform of free wellbeing services, resources and events.

How to get assistance

To access the service:

If you fear for your safety or a family member's, ask for a crisis professional.

If you or someone else is in imminent danger, call emergency services on 000.

Counselling and coaching for your wellbeing

You and your immediate family can access:

  • Up to 6 sessions over 12 months with a psychologist for any issue
  • Plus 6 sessions for an unrelated issue over the same period
  • Either face-to-face, over the phone or via a video call.

You can use this service for almost anything that troubles you, including:

  • Family relationships and parenting
  • Work challenges and work-life balance
  • Stress and conflict
  • Grief and loss
  • Sleep habits.

Phone counselling is available anytime – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – but for face-to-face and video counselling you’ll need to make an appointment. If you can’t attend an appointment, please call 1300 307 912. If you do not cancel your appointment or cancel within 24 hours of your appointment, it will count as 1 of your 6 free sessions.

Counselling sessions are usually solution focused. The psychologist can refer you to a suitable service if you require further support. Any information you disclose is confidential, and no identifying information or reports will be given to UQ without your consent.

EAP counselling can also be provided using Australian Sign Language (Auslan) or with the assistance of a bilingual psychologist or an interpreter if required.

Welfare Calls

If you have concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a staff member you can contact PeopleSense to request a welfare call.

Examples of possible reasons for a welfare call include:

  • Staff member has experienced or disclosed something to their supervisor relating to a loss or traumatic event.
  • Staff member has made concerning statements relating to “giving up” or being unsure if they can continue.
  • Employee had an emotional reaction to redundancy/termination or other performance management discussions.

To initiate a welfare call, contact PeopleSense on 1300 307 912 and select option ‘2’ to be put through to the critical line for triage and assistance.

Critical incidents

This service provides support after a critical incident associated with the workplace or a colleague.

Managers should contact their HR Client Services team to identify the relevant procedures and support considerations. Managers or HR should then call 1300 307 912 to arrange this service. You'll be asked about the timing, location and the number of employees to be supported.

Critical incident support can often be arranged on the same day or within 24 hours.

Domestic or family violence

Call 1300 307 912 at any time – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – if you or someone close to you is experiencing family violence.

You’ll get immediate and confidential support from a psychologist trained to help people experiencing domestic violence. Also, you can be referred to organisations in your area that can provide you with further assistance.

Exercise

UQ staff can access:

  • Up to 3 hours of individualised exercise support
  • Via a video call.

We can develop a customised exercise plan based on your fitness, goals and preferred exercise methods. Exercise plans can be performed at home and don’t have to be overly strenuous. Sessions can also be used to monitor your fitness and update your plan.

Family law

UQ staff can access:

  • Up to 2 hours of family law advice
  • Over the phone.

This service will give you a free initial consult with a family lawyer, plus one free follow-up session, on any family law matter, including:

  • Pre-nuptial and parenting agreements
  • Separation and divorce
  • Binding financial property settlements.

Finance

UQ staff can access:

  • Up to 3 hours of financial counselling
  • Over the phone.

This service will build your understanding of your finances and budgeting. We do not make product recommendations or promote any financial organisation.

Nutrition

UQ staff can access:

  • Up to 3 hours of nutritional counselling with a nutritionist or dietician
  • Over the phone.

We can provide dietary advice and develop a nutrition program to encourage healthier eating habits and address weight problems.

Managing staff

UQ Managers and supervisors can access:

  • Confidential support to discuss workplace issues and challenges
  • Over the phone anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This service does not replace advice from Human Resources on managing specific matters.

Support may include:

  • Your wellbeing at work
  • Coaching on discussing wellbeing with team members
  • Helping staff with mental health concerns or ill health
  • Handling performance, conflict, communication, and individual or team behaviour
  • Providing a sounding board on people or team-related topics.
