Purchasing desktops, laptops and tablets
Staff can purchase desktops, laptops and tablets via UQeMarket, from the following authorised suppliers:
Standard models are offered at bulk pricing rates so are significantly cheaper. They also ship with UQ software pre-loaded and will be supported by your IT support team. Accessories and other small IT items may appear on UQeMarket from other suppliers whose prices are outside our management. We recommend due diligence in price-checking other suppliers' products.
If the devices on UQeMarket don't meet your business needs you can request a custom quote.
ITS and UQ Procurement have negotiated improved pricing and delivery times for UQ standard desktop, laptop computers, monitors and tablets.
The changes to the ordering process are:
- Choose a UQ standard computer (desktop or laptop), tablet or accessory from the standard catalogue at UQeMarket. Delivery time for these items is expected to be 3-5 business days.
- The standard catalogue contains the most commonly used items.
- Custom orders - items not part of the standard catalogue - require approval before an order can be placed. See Non-standard purchases and custom quotes for more information.

ITS has noticed a rise in the number of support tickets logged relating to laptop thermal issues. These issues include:
- noisy cooling fans
- uncomfortably high surface temperatures
- reductions in laptop performance.
It is now highly recommended that any UQ staff member looking to purchase a laptop also purchase a laptop stand at the same time to try and mitigate these issues.
You can find a number of different types of laptop stand on UQeMarket. If you're having trouble choosing one, here are some tips:
- Apple MacBook laptops generally do not benefit from laptop stands due to their unique cooling design.
- Look for a stand that leaves the base of the laptop as open as possible.
- Laptop stands with fans offer little to no benefit compared to a passive laptop stand.
- Avoid stands that completely cover the base of the laptop as this gives no benefit to air circulation over just having the laptop sitting on the desk.
- Avoid stands that claim they act as a heat sink, as this would require metal-to-metal contact to conduct the heat from the laptop to the stand. This is a bad idea for several reasons.
- While you can achieve the same effect by propping up the back of your laptop with something like a book, this is not recommended as it could damage the laptop, or the item used to prop up the laptop.
