Menus help users navigate between pages on a website and understand where they are in a site's structure.

On new Drupal, there are 2 types of menu:

Local navigation

Local navigation helps users navigate between the pages on your site. It's only visible on the site you're currently visiting. It appears on the left side of the page on desktop view.

Items in your navigation should reflect user needs, not organisational unit structure.

Most landing and basic pages should be in local navigation and display local navigation. There are some exceptions, including:

  • Templated content types (like scholarships, events and programs) are accessed via search listing pages and therefore don't appear in local navigation.
  • Campaign pages (pages that only support campaign goals) are usually accessed directly via paid media (social media, search ads) and therefore shouldn't appear in local navigation.

Add pages to the menu

If you're creating a new landing or basic page, you need to think about how users will navigate to your page. Most pages should be a child page that provides more information related to the topic of a parent page.

To add your page to the menu:

  1. Navigate to the 'Edit' screen of your page.
  2. Check the 'Show in navigation' checkbox. This means local navigation will display on your page.
  3. For a landing page, populate the 'Hero title', 'Lead text' and 'Hero image' fields. Don't create a hero banner on the 'Layout' screen. Find out more about hero banners.
  4. Navigate to 'Menu settings' (in the right column).
  5. Check the 'Provide a menu link' checkbox. This adds your page to the local navigation.
  6. Complete 'Menu link title'. This is what will display in the local navigation. In most cases, it should be the same as the page title and should auto-populate. However, if you ever change your page name, you'll need to manually update the menu link title.
  7. Select a 'Parent item'. This is the page that sits above your page logically in the site structure. Don't select '<Main>' unless you're adding a page at the top level of your site.
  8. Once the page is published, your page will appear in the local navigation for users navigating your site, and local navigation will appear on the page itself.

Global navigation

Global navigation is the overarching menu that helps users navigate between core UQ websites as a single experience.

Global navigation applies across all UQ websites. It sits at the top of the page on desktop view..

Global navigation is managed by central Marketing and Communication. If you believe there should be changes to the global navigation, contact your Digital Presence Coordinator.
