If you work in an office on campus, you can connect to a printer from either your UQ computer or personal computer.

  1. Contact your Manager or Team Leader to arrange access to the appropriate printer access permission group for your area.
  2. Identify the printer name and server name of the printer you wish to use.
  3. If using a laptop wirelessly, ensure the computer is connected to both UQ wifi and UQ VPN.
  4. Follow the instructions below for your computer's operating system.

Windows

When you log in to a UQ Windows computer, your nearest printers may already appear as available printer options. If not, follow these instructions to manually add the required printer.

Windows 11

  1. Open the 'Start' menu.
  2. Type the word 'printer', then select the 'Printers & scanners' option when it appears.
  3. Click the 'Add device' button.
  4. Locate the 'The printer that I want isn't listed' option within the list, then click 'Add manually'. The option may take a few moments to appear in the list.
  5. Select the 'Select a shared printer by name' option.
  6. Enter the printer's address in the following format:
    \\servername.compute.dc.uq.edu.au\printername.
    (For example, \\uq-print-01.compute.dc.uq.edu.au\ITS-Ricoh.)
  7. Select 'Next' to connect to the printer.
  8. Select 'Finish'.

Windows 10

  1. Open the 'Start' menu.
  2. Type the word 'printer', then select the 'Printers & scanners' option when it appears.
  3. Select 'Add a printer'.
  4. Select 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
  5. Select the 'Select a shared printer by name' option.
  6. Enter the printer's address in the following format:
    \\servername.compute.dc.uq.edu.au\printername
    (For example, \\uq-print-01.compute.dc.uq.edu.au\ITS-Ricoh.)
  7. Select 'Next' to connect to the printer.
  8. If you would like to add this printer as your default printer, select 'Set as default printer'.
  9. Select 'Finish'.

When printing, select the added printer from the available options. If the printer you have added does not appear as an option, you may not have permission to access it. Please submit an IT request to request access.

If you have both a UQ staff and a student account, make sure you swipe the ID card at the printer based on the account you are logged into on the computer.

macOS

If you are using a UQ Mac computer, you will need to manually connect to a UQ printer the first time you use it.

  1. Press both the 'Command' and 'Spacebar' keys to open the 'Spotlight' search tool.
  2. Type ‘self service’ into the search box and then click the 'Self Service' option when it appears.
  3. Select the 'Printers' category on the left menu.
  4. Click 'Install' on the printer you would like connected.
  5. Click 'Install' again.
  6. Click 'Close' when the printer has been connected.

If the required printer is not an available option within Self Service, follow the instructions below to manually add a UQ printer.

  1. Click the Apple menu icon at the top left of your screen, then select the 'System Settings' option.
  2. Select 'Printers & Scanners' from the menu on the left side of the window. You may need to scroll down the menu to locate it.
  3. This step will vary depending on the version of your MacOS operating system:
    MacOS Ventura - Click the 'Add printer, Scanner or Fax...' button.
    MacOS Monterey - Click the button at the bottom left of the window.
  4. Click the  cog icon to access the Advanced menu. If the icon is not visible, you will need to add it manually:
    • Right click (or Control + click) on the empty space around the existing icons, then click 'Customise Toolbar'.
    • Drag and drop the Advanced cog icon up to the tool bar alonside the other icons, then click 'Done'.
  5. Within the Advanced menu, update the available fields as follows:
    • Type - Select 'LPD/LPR Host or Printer'.
    • Device - Select 'Another Device'.
    • URL - Add the printer's address in the following format:
      lpd://username@servername.compute.dc.uq.edu.au/printername
      (For example, lpd://uqjsmith@uq-print-01.compute.dc.uq.edu.au/ITS-Ricoh).
    • Name - Enter the printer's name (e.g. ITS-Ricoh).
    • Location - Leave blank.
    • Use - Select the printer's driver, if available. If not available, select the 'Generic PostScript Printer' option. Please note that this option allows for printing in black and white only.
  6. Click 'Add'. The system will automatically set up your printer.
  7. You may receive a prompt if the printer supports duplex (double-sided) printing. If so, tick the 'Duplex Printing Unit' box, then click OK'.

If you are unable to add a printer, please submit an IT request.

If you have both a UQ staff and a student account, make sure you swipe the ID card at the printer based on the account you are logged into on the computer.

Printing from your own device is available on printers with controlled release functionality, where you are required to swipe your ID card to release your print jobs.

To print from your own device, follow the instructions for your device's operating system.
