News article classifications are used on the News article content type, which is only published on the UQ News website.

Articles published may be simple press releases, or more detailed features, opinion or analysis articles.

News article types

News article

A brief topical and current story / media release that covers who, what, where and why.  

Includes: 

  • Teaser/hero image 
  • Summary 
  • Key points (optional) 
  • Body content – little usage of visual components (no more than 1-2 images) 
  • Media contact  

Length: 300-400 words 

Examples: 

Most stories published currently on UQ News.

Feature

A longer story that explores a subject in greater detail than a news story. Describes the research/human impact in more depth. Written with more creative style and adds ‘colour’ to the story.   

Includes: 

  • Teaser/hero image 
  • Summary 
  • Key points (optional) 
  • Body content – includes more visual components to support the story (sub-headings, pull quotes, graphics, image gallery, social media embed, videos).  

Length: 800-1200 words

Opinion

A story from an expert’s perspective that includes their argument on the topic. 

Tone: expert’s own perspective/voice. (‘what you think about it’) 

Author: as this article is from the expert’s own perspective, they must nominate themselves as the author. 

Includes: 

  • Disclaimer – this view is the author’s and not reflective of the University’s.  
  • Teaser/hero image 
  • Summary: short, sharp and should draw the reader in 
  • Key points (optional but relevant) 
  • Body content (subheadings) 
  • can include imagery if it helps to support the opinion, but also doesn’t need to be an overly visual article.  
  • As the piece is based on the expert’s research, use references and links to support the statements. However, it’s important to ensure the piece is able to be understood by all, not just fellow experts in the field.  
  • The opinion piece should have a position that the author is trying to inform readers of. 
  • Pull quotes, call-out boxes (about the author), other components as needed.  

Investigate callout box style for promoting the author at the bottom of the article.  

Length: 750-800 words

Analysis

An in-depth analysis of a particular topic (usually a topical current event of broad interest to a wider UQ and community audience) by an expert/s in the topic area.  

Tone: informative and unbiased. If an article does show a clear point of view, it should be tagged as ‘opinion’.  

Author: include author’s byline of the analysis.  

Includes: 

  • Teaser/hero image 
  • Summary 
  • Key points (mandatory) 
  • Body content (subheadings to breakdown topics)  
  • Can include imagery if it helps provide further information to the user to help them understand.  

Length: 750-1,000 words

Video

A story told in a video format with little to no supporting text. 

Includes:  

  • Teaser/hero image 
  • Summary 
  • Video 
  • Accordion with transcription of the video within it.  

Length: no specified length. There should be minimal text on the page that isn’t a transcription of the video itself.  

Don’t allow republishing for this article type.  

Video should be the sole focus of the article. If the video is being used in an additional article, an individual video article shouldn’t be needed as well.

Embedding audio or video

  • if you embed a video or a podcast, you need to include a transcript. Here's how: (Need to think about how to do this for YouTube/Vimeo, where you can enable a transcript; check what each service provider provides) 
  • If you’re embedding on a UQ news page, you’re responsible for copying and pasting the transcript into the template if it’s available 
  • Include the video transcript in an accordion with the heading ‘Download the transcript’ 
  • If you’re linking out to an external place, ensure they have the transcript easily available 
  • don't use republish feature on video/audio.
