UQ Standard websites built on Drupal are hosted for free on UQ servers.

If you request a custom website or application, you may have to pay for web hosting.

Web hosting

Before you request a new custom website or application, submit an IT request to discuss your requirements and hosting options. You may need to pay for:

  • an external web hosting service, or
  • UQ’s internal web hosting service.

External web hosting

You need approval from ITS before you enter into an agreement with an external web hosting service.

Submit an IT request to request approval and include the:

  • purpose of your application
  • lifespan of the application
  • source of your funding and resources for ongoing support
  • expected timeline for launching your application
  • estimated budget.

Make sure you budget for the lifespan of the website or application. ITS can't provide technical support for externally hosted websites or applications.

Internal web hosting

UQ’s paid web hosting is on a platform called Altera and is available to all UQ departments and affiliates. Altera hosting is on a virtual Unix-based web server with:

  • PHP 5.3
  • 200MB of web space
  • MySQL database (up to 5MB)
  • a custom email address.

Submit an IT request to discuss the suitability of Altera for your website or application.

Cost

There are standard costs involved with Altera web hosting, which are outlined on the application form below.

Because ITS provides limited technical support for Altera-hosted websites and applications, you will also have to cover costs for ongoing technical support including:

  • maintenance
  • administration
  • security updates.

Apply

Once you've spoken to ITS and think Altera is suitable for your needs, use the application form to apply for Altera web hosting:
