Referendum outcome

15 Oct 2023

Dear staff,

I want to acknowledge that the outcome of the referendum will be causing great hurt and sadness for many in our Indigenous community, many of whom were actively involved in the long campaign leading up to Saturday’s vote.

While the decision of this democratic process must be respected, it showed that many Australians do want the views of Indigenous people heard and counted in relation to matters that affect them. They want to improve the lives and outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

I know that the months ahead will be difficult. In the words of the Prime Minister, “it's now up to all of us to come together and find a different way to the same reconciled destination.”

However, our immediate focus at UQ needs to be on reaching out to our Indigenous communities, in particular our staff and students. Letting them know we are here when they are ready and, most importantly, listening, giving them time and ensuring that UQ is a safe, respectful and welcoming place.

We have a range of supports available to Indigenous staff and students, which have been shared with the community and this information is available on our website.

In speaking with Professor Bronwyn Fredericks, I know she has encouraged Indigenous staff and students to take time out, to come together on country with Elders and access emotional well-being support.

I would encourage all managers and staff involved in teaching and learning to work with Indigenous staff and students to see what support they may need.

Many non-Indigenous Australians will also be feeling disheartened by the result and see it as a missed opportunity for Indigenous recognition and national progress.

I want to remind staff that UQ’s Employee Assistance Program provides free and confidential 24/7 counselling for them and their family. And, for students, our Student Services team can help with accessing counselling, provide advice and study support.

We are fortunate to have such a caring, supportive and inclusive UQ community. As an institution, we will continue to play our role in helping to close the gap in relation to health, education and employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

With best wishes
Debbie
