You can use FileZilla to manage files on UQ web servers, or you can use any other FTP client software.

To connect to FTP servers, your computer needs to be on the UQ network. If you're off campus, connect to the VPN (virtual private network) first.

Step 1: Download FileZilla

You can download FileZilla for free from the FileZilla site. Once you've downloaded and installed the software, you can connect to FTP servers.

More information about using FileZilla is available on the FileZilla site.

Step 2: Connect to the FTP server

From the Quickconnect bar at the top of the screen, enter the:

  • Host: sftp://wsaftp.uq.edu.au
  • Username and password: use the login details for your UQ web hosting services account (this may be different to your usual UQ account)
  • Port: 22

Click 'Quickconnect' to connect to the server.

If you have trouble connecting, go to 'Edit' > 'Settings' > 'Connection', and change the 'Timeout' setting to 0.

Step 3: Upload or download files

In FileZilla, you can drag and drop files between the 'Local site' and 'Remote site' panes to upload and download files.

Local site

The 'Local site' pane (labelled '4' in the image) shows the file system on your computer. Use this pane to:

  • browse to find files you want to upload to the server
  • choose a location on your computer where you want to download files from the server.

Remote site

The 'Remote site' pane (labelled '5' in the image) shows the file system on the FTP server. Use this pane to:

  • find the location you want to upload files to
  • find files you want to download.

If you are uploading files, make sure you upload to the [public_html] folder.

Message log pane

The 'Message log' pane (labelled '6' in the image) provides technical details about what is happening.

You can see exactly which files are being moved at any time and also view information on the status of the connection to the remote server.

Step 4: Disconnect from the server

When you've finished transferring files, click Disconnect from the server (labelled '7' in the image) to end your connection with the server.

If you don't want to use FileZilla, you can use any FTP software to connect to the FTP server. Enter these settings:

  • Host: sftp://wsaftp.uq.edu.au
  • Protocols:
    • FTPS (SSL required, Port 21)
    • SFTP (SSH protocol, Port 22)
  • Username and password: the login details for your UQ web hosting services account (this may be different to your usual UQ account).

If you're uploading files, make sure you upload to the [public_html] folder.
