UQ RDM “Q” Collection planned outage

11 September 2020

The UQ RDM "Q" collections (also known as a HPC “Q” or “QRISdata” collection) will experience a significant planned outage from 5pm Thursday 1 October until 5pm Monday 5 October to allow the infrastructure to be upgraded by the vendor. The upgrade will enable enhancements to the scalability and usability of the current system as part of a significant one-off investment in the underlying infrastructure. The upgrade will also replace older technologies with newer, more powerful and resilient hardware. This outage will only affect access to “Q” collections; other UQ RDM collections “A” and “I” will remain unaffected throughout.

What does it mean?

“Q” collections will be unavailable from 5pm Thursday 1 October until 5pm Monday 5 October. During this time, "Q" collections will not be accessible from desktop, laptop, workstation, RDM cloud and UQ supercomputing platforms. All data will remain safe and unmodified throughout the upgrade process and there will be no changes to the process of accessing data post-upgrade.

What do you need to do?

If you use the UQ RDM “Q” collection, please ensure that prior to 5pm Thursday 1 October you:

  • Identify any data in “Q” collections that you will need to access during the outage window (between 5pm 1 October and 5pm 5 October)
  • If you require the use of supercomputers when working with your data, copy your data to a scratch location on that supercomputer;
  •  If you require your collection on a workstation, you can
    • create a new RDM “A” or “I” collection which will continue to function during this outage; or
    • copy the required data to the local disk on your workstation, or a UQ OneDrive and copy it back to your Q collection afterwards. Please note that changes made on a local copy are not backed up until they are transferred back onto the Q collection.

UQ understands that this outage may have a potential impact on workflow. If you require support to minimise the impact on your research through this scheduled outage, please contact IT Support.
